IND vs SA: Former players condemn India’s overconfidence in Boxing Day Test

Former cricketers express concern and criticism over India's perceived overconfidence against South Africa

Former Indian cricketers Sanjay Manjrekar and Sanjay Bangar believe that overconfidence was the pivot to India’s loss in the IND vs SA 1st Test. A key performance by Dean Elgar and the South African bowling contingent gave South Africa a 1-0 lead in the series.

India posted a total of 245 runs in the 1st innings will a brilliant century by KL Rahul as they looked for their maiden Test win on South African soil. However, Bangar relayed that India probably did not expect Australia to put up the show that they did with Dean Elgar contributing a whopping 185 runs to Proteas’ 408.

” I think that Indian team probably anticipated the South African batting lineup to fold up very quickly,” said Bangar speaking to Star Sports.

” After getting to 245, India felt that the score was enough and they did not expect that sort of a fight back from South Africa” he added

Speaking next Sanjay Manjrekar also resonated to the point that overconfidence and faulty assessment were what that led to India faltering. Not to mention their poor outing in the second innings.

“The way Bumrah and others were bowling, they were trying to get a wicket in every ball. Siraj, Prasidh and all the changes you saw were because India wanted to fold South Africa up in about 150” stated Manjrekar.

“So the lesson learnt is that you cannot be going into a game that confident” Manjrekar concluded.

South Africa posted a formidable total of 408 runs in reply to India’s first innings score of 245. Despite India’s initial effort, the Men in Blue faced a disheartening defeat as they were dismissed for a mere 145 runs in the second innings.
