South Africa batter Dean Elgar on Thursday handed the Proteas a huge advantage with a chanceless innings of 185 in the IND vs SA 1st Test. Elgar made the Indian bowling line up toil hard while opening the innings. It was finally Shardul Thakur who got rid of the left-hander. In a heartwarming moment after Elgar’s dismissal, the Centurion crowd gave the left-hander a standing ovation for his magnificent innings.

Elgar, who announced his retirement after the ongoing IND vs SA Test series, looked assured right from the start of the innings. The left-handed batter played a patient innings, building partnerships with David Bedingham and later Marco Jansen to ensure South Africa took a healthy lead over India in the first innings.
Elgar’s innings was studded with 28 fours as the Indian bowlers looked listless in front of a determined Elgar. Elgar negotiated the short balls thrown at him with ease, moving out of the way to ensure no unwanted edges resulted in his wicket.
On a Test match when most of the batters from both sides failed to convert starts into big scores, Elgar’s innings showed what it exactly took to succeed in these South African conditions.
The Centurion crowd, which consisted of many Indian supporters too, appreciated Elgar’s innings too. Though the Indian faithful would have surely been happy to the see the back of Elgar after batting for one and a half days, his grit and determination was appreciated by one and all. When Elgar was returning to the pavillion after getting out, the whole Centurion crowd stood on their feet and applauded Elgar’s innings wholeheartedly.
