Ricky Ponting, the legendary former Australian captain, has dismissed suggestions for Cameron Green to replace David Warner, emphasizing the need for selectors to choose a specialist opener as Warner’s successor.
Despite calls from figures like Simon Katich, who believe that the emerging all-rounder Cameron Green could fill Warner’s opening spot, Ponting insists on the importance of having a specialist batsman, especially with an eye on the upcoming significant series against India and England in the next two years.
Responding bluntly to the prospect of Cameron Green taking over from Warner, Ponting stated, “No chance. Time to go back and find Australia’s next best opening batsman with the India Test series and Ashes in mind.”

David Warner, set to retire after the third Test against Pakistan in Sydney, has nominated Marcus Harris as his preferred replacement. This preference has stirred reactions, with former Australian selector Jamie Cox criticizing Warner for publicly expressing his opinion.
Harris, along with Matt Renshaw and Cameron Bancroft, is one of the three specialist openers in contention for a recall in the upcoming Tests against West Indies in January.
Ponting had previously supported Bancroft, citing his impressive performance in the Sheffield Shield. Bancroft, with the leading run-scorer title in the previous season and topping the current season’s leaderboard, has gained momentum.
Ricky Ponting stated a month ago, “If you look at those three guys, I think it’s quite clear that Bancroft is the one that’s got the runs on the board and I wouldn’t be surprised if they (selectors) go that way.”
Mike Hussey, another former teammate of Ponting, also echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need for a traditional, experienced opener to succeed Warner.
In the face of suggestions to move all-rounders like Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, or Mitch Marsh up the order, Ponting and Hussey underline the challenges of opening and advocate for an experienced and specialized candidate for the crucial role.
