‘Same people were abusing me some months ago’: KL Rahul opens up on battling online abuse

"It does affect each person. And anyone who says that doesn't affect them at all, I'm sure is lying."

India’s dynamic batsman, KL Rahul, has revealed the toll of online abuse on his mental well-being, highlighting the impact it had on him as an individual. Despite the challenges, Rahul’s recent international comeback showcased resilience as he notched a remarkable century, marking his sixth away from Asia.

KL Rahul responded to his critics in a resounding manner by scoring a magnificent century in the current Test match against South Africa in Centurion. In contrast to retaliating verbally, Rahul adheres to the philosophy of allowing his bat to speak on his behalf.

Speaking candidly about the struggles of handling social media criticism, KL Rahul acknowledged the influence it can have on a player’s mindset. He shared, “It is difficult obviously. When you play international cricket, you are challenged each day, each moment. Social media is a pressure. Today I have scored a hundred so people are singing praises. Three-four months ago, everybody was abusing me.”

The cricketer emphasized the need to distance oneself from the negativity, stating, “It does affect each person. And anyone who says that doesn’t affect them at all, I’m sure is lying. The sooner you realize that staying away from it is good for your game and your mindset, the better it is.”

He expressed enjoyment in playing in challenging conditions and admitted to a “huge luck factor” in his successful innings.
