Ahead of IND vs SA 1st Test Day 2, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has gone on to claim about the difference in cricket coverage of South Africa. Back in the days, in 1992 Gavaskar claimed that the SA’s television coverage was extremely South Africa centric.
South Africa was banned by the ICC back in 1970. After a long span of 21 years the ban was lifted. As a result to prove their worth, South Africa were extremely biased in their coverage.
“Back in the days, South Africa’s Television coverage of cricket was very different. It was their first year, so they wanted to show how competitive they were. They wanted to show what happened in the past 20-21 years were different. They wanted to show that they were World Champions,” said Sunil Gavaskar.
South Africa cricket was banned by ICC in 1970 for their apartheid laws. Back then the racial law forbade any non-white player from playing in for the South Africa National Cricket Team.
“Back then it was totally South African centric coverage. Even two years back on that DRS call. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul were involved. Kohli told on the stump mic. It was the same back in 1992,” Gavaskar concluded.
Controversies with SA Television Broadcast continues still. Back in 2021, Virat Kohli was extremely angry with SA’s DRS call. The ever aggressive Kohli was spotted giving a mouthful to the stump mic.
