IND vs SA: Ravi Shastri reveals India’s unique advantage in Boxing Day Test

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri explains India's unique edge in the Boxing Day Test against the Proteas.

Former head coach of the Indian cricket team, Ravi Shastri, expressed confidence in India’s ability to clinch their first-ever Test series victory on South African soil. Shastri pointed out a significant advantage for India—the absence of former Proteas cricketer Vernon Philander. According to Shastri, Philander’s exclusion from the South African squad creates a favorable opportunity for the Rohit Sharma-led Indian side.

“This is India’s best chance, you know why? Because this bloke is not playing,” Shastri said pointing towards Philander during the pre-match show for Star Sports

No Vernon Philander in IND vs SA:

Vernon Philander, known for his exceptional record against India, particularly during his playing career, posed a significant threat with the ball. In five Test matches played at home, Philander amassed an impressive tally of 25 wickets at an average of 18. Shastri specifically referred to the fast bowler’s prowess and emphasized that Philander’s non-participation automatically tips the balance in India’s favor.

“We would have beaten South Africa at least twice when I came here but for this fellow. We’ve seen Rabada’s record, and Ngidi’s record. Take a look at his record as well against India. He always gets the important wickets when we don’t want one to fall,” Shastri added.

In 2018, Shastri was at the helm of the Indian cricket team when they faced a 1-2 defeat in the Test series against South Africa. During that series, Philander emerged as the top performer, claiming 15 wickets and contributing significantly to India’s series loss.

Insidesport

The Test series between India and South Africa commenced with the toss won by South Africa, who elected to send India in to bat at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Tuesday. The start of play experienced a 30-minute delay due to damp patches on the pitch, a result of the reported 51mm of rain that fell since Sunday. As the series unfolds, the absence of Philander becomes a focal point, and India aims to capitalize on this opportunity to secure a historic Test series triumph on South African soil.
