‘He finds ways to get out’ Simon Doull slams Sanju Samson after poor outing in IND vs SA 2nd ODI

Samson’s batting style was criticised by Doull, who described his dismissal as typical of an Indian wicket-keeper who shuffles and plays inside the line only to edge onto the stumps

Sanju Samson, who has been under the scanner for quite some time now, has once again failed to make a good impression as he was dismissed for a paltry 12 in the IND vs SA 2nd ODI on December 19. India suffered an 8-wicket defeat against South Africa in the match. Sanju Samson’s dismal performance invited criticism from former cricketer turned commentator Simon Doull, who said Samson finds ways to frequently get out at crucial moments.

Samson’s inconsistency is a cause for concern, especially as his notable knocks have been few and far between. In fact, he played just one meaningful knock in the entire past year, in the ODI series against the West Indies. With KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan already in the fold after some fine performances, Sanju Samson’s place in the Indian set-up seems to be in jeopardy. The right-handed batsman’s inability to get back to form is putting his chances of making it to the Indian team.

Problem for Sanju Samson is…: Simon Doull

Samson’s batting style was criticised by Doull, who described his dismissal as typical of an Indian wicket-keeper who shuffles and plays inside the line only to edge onto the stumps.

“Yeah, he’s not had a real extended run, but he’s had opportunities in back-to-back games. Quite a typical, Sanju Samson dismissal. You know, he finds ways to get out when at times he shouldn’t. He’s a little shuffle playing away from his body. We see that often. It’s ok on surfaces in India to be playing away from your body when the ball doesn’t do much,” Doull said.

“But it’s nipping around a little, quite fraught with danger, that type of shot, you see the angle of the bat at 45 degrees. It’s not a classical straight bat shot. He sort of wants that wand outside the line of off-stump far too often, and I think that’s why people get frustrated with Sanju. There are those who absolutely love him, and when he’s flowing, there’s not much better to watch. The problem for Sanju is putting it together in the blue shirt,” Doull added.
