IPL 2024 Auction: Pat Cummins’s historic Rs 20.50 crore bid defies logic

IPL 2024 Auction: Sunrisers Hyderabad paid a historic Rs 20.50 crore bid for Pat Cummins but a quick glance at his IPL records will tell you the bidding war defied logic and clarity

Australia’s World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins became the first cricketer in history to cross the Rs 20 crore mark in any IPL auction. On Tuesday, at the IPL 2024 Auction, Cummins was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for a whopping Rs 20.50 crore.

There was a huge bidding war for Pat Cummins from Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. However, SRH prevailed after holding their nerves under pressure.

Pat Cummins stormed into the record books after upstaging Sam Curran’s Rs 18.50 crore bid by Punjab.

Insidesport

The huge figure for Pat Cummims would have come as a surprise for many in the cricket fraternity. In 42 matches in the IPL, Pat Cummins has picked 45 wickets at an expensive 8.54 runs-an-over and managed to score only 379 runs.

Pat Cummins was sold to Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 7.25 crore but his performances were dissapointing. He played only 5 matches and apart from a rapid half-century, the Australian star had little to show for.

With the ball, Pat Cummins had meager returns and picked only 7 wickets from the 5 matches he played.

Insidesport

Pat Cummins wasn’t even in great form for Australia in the ODI World Cup and came into his own in the semifinals and final against New Zealand and India.

Why the Cummins bid defies logic further is his records in T20 Internationals. Cummins does have 55 wickets from 50 T20Is but he averages less than 10 with the bat. What SRH want to achieve by paying Pat Cummins that kind of money is still not clear.

There was another surprise pick later when Punjab Kings paid Rs 11.75 crore to Harshal Patel, who was the Purple Cap winner a few years back but has suffered a dip in form recently.
