Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon on Sunday achieved a rare milestone of taking 500 wickets in Tests when he helped Australia gain a 1-0 lead in the PAK vs AUS Test series. Lyon became only the eighth bowler in the world to achieve this rare feat. The cricketing world stood up to acknowledge this great feat and Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was one of them. The Indian posted on X, congratulating his Aussie counterpart. Lyon on Monday returned the favour in style, and wished to see Ashwin in the same bracket soon.
Nathan Lyon was on 496 wickets before the PAK vs AUS 1st Test. Lyon took 3 wickets in the first innings and only need a wicket in the second innings to achieve the milestone. It took him seven overs in the second innings to get the wicket he required to reach 500 Test wickets. Lyon trapped Faheem Ashraf in front of the stumps to claim his 500th Test wicket.
Lyon only became the second off-spinner to achieve this feat, prompting a happy response from Indian ace Ravichandran Ashwin. Ashwin took to X (previously Twitter) to express his glee. “8th bowler and only the 2nd off spinner in history to pick 500 test wickets. NathLyon421 congrats mate,” he wrote, followed by two GOAT emojis.
Nathan Lyon on Monday replied to Ashwin’s comments and expressed desire to see Ashwin in the same bracket soon. “Really appreciated ashwinravi99. Can’t wait to watch you hit the same milestone,” Lyon wrote on Twitter.
Notably, Ashwin is not too far from the 500-wicket milestone himself, needing only 11 more wickets to achieve this feat and record his name in the history books. Ashwin has been picked for the IND vs SA Test series. Will he able to take 11 wickets in the series and go into the 500-wicket club? Nathan Lyon will certainly be hoping so.
