Mumbai Indians sent riptides in the cricket world when they announced that Hardik Pandya will be the new skipper of the team for IPL 2024. With Rohit Sharma no longer the skipper, the fans were disappointed and vented out their frustrations and opinions on social media. But former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has claimed that fans shouldn’t be sentimental or emotional with Rohit Sharma no longer being the skipper of MI.
“One should not be thinking sentimentally or emotionally about Rohit Sharma. I think it’s a good move as Hardik Pandya is a proven leader and has had a great run. So, he is your in-form T20 captain and player,” Sanjay Manjrekar told Star Sports after IND vs SA 1st ODI.
Sanjay Manjrekar defended his statement by claiming that Hardik Pandya is the potential new skipper of the Indian team in the coming days. Hardik has been leading the Indian side after 2022 T20 World Cup. “Rohit has been around for a long time. So, it makes a lot of cricketing sense to have somebody like Hardik,” Manjrekar added.
Citing cricketing sense, Manjrekar has claimed that the fans should not be emotional or sentimental with Rohit Sharma no longer leading the charge for the Paltans in IPL 2024. As for Hardik, Manjrekar feels that Hardik shouldn’t feel much tension given how Pandya’s transfer to MI happened.
“I just hope he doesn’t feel the pressure of how the transferred happened and Mumbai Indians backing him so much,” Manjrekar concluded.
On IPL 2024 Retention day, Gujarat Titans announced that Hardik Pandya was retained by the team. However, hours later, Hardik Pandya was traded off to Mumbai Indians. In his absence, Shubman Gill will be the new skipper of the Titans in IPL 2024.
