On a path to redeem himself, Arshdeep Singh created history by becoming the first Indian fast bowler to take a five-wicket haul against South Africa. He clinched this milestone in the 1st ODI match in Johannesburg on Sunday.
Arshdeep has returned to the side after his abysmal performance in the last series against New Zealand in 2022. He was wicketless in the three-match series.
The left-arm medium-fast delivered a phenomenal spell of 5/37, uprooting the South African top order and bundling out them at their third-lowest total against India of 116.
Arshdeep Singh fourth Indian to take 5-fer vs SA
Sunil Joshi (5/6) was the first bowler to take a 5-fer against Proteas but he was a spinner. The other two bowlers who have achieved their milestone are also spinners, Yuzvendra Chahal (5/22) and Ravindra Jadeja (5/33) have taken five wickets for South Africa in ODIs.
Arshdeep Singh dismantled SA top order
The 24-year-old dismantled the SA top order with his first over. He clobbered at Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen to take two consecutive wickets, leaving the SA scorecard to 2-3. In later overs, he dismissed Tony de Zorzi and Heinrich Klaasen. He chose Andile Phehlukwayo as a target to achieve his fifth wicket.
