Salt’s maiden century and Brook’s epic finish keep T20I series thrillingly alive

The series, now tied, promises more thrilling action as England faces West Indies again on Tuesday, December 18, in Trinidad.

In a thrilling display of cricket prowess, England pulled off a record chase against West Indies, keeping the T20I series alive with a ball to spare. Phil Salt’s maiden T20I hundred and an explosive performance by Harry Brook ensured a breathtaking victory as they successfully chased down 223 runs.

Initially, it seemed England would face defeat in the T20I series as West Indies posted a formidable total of 222-6, recovering from a shaky start at 8-2. Nicholas Pooran’s splendid 82 off 45 and a late onslaught in the death overs, where 79 runs were plundered, set a daunting target.

Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, and Jason Holder contributed crucial cameos, setting the stage for a historic chase.

West Indies vs England: The chase

Facing the challenge, England’s openers Jos Buttler and Phil Salt set the tone with a century opening stand. Buttler departed in the 12th over, but Salt continued his onslaught. Gudakesh Motie’s economical spell slowed down England, creating tension as they entered the last four overs needing 71 runs to win.

In an extraordinary display of power-hitting, Salt smashed three consecutive sixes, reaching his maiden T20I century. Liam Livingstone’s contribution kept England in the game, but it was Harry Brook who emerged as the hero. Brook’s arrival in the 18th over shifted the momentum, as he struck a six off his first ball and showcased remarkable composure.

With 21 required off the last over, a feat never achieved against West Indies in T20Is, Brook dazzled with a flurry of boundaries. His innings, featuring four sixes in seven balls, culminated in a spectacular victory for England. Phil Salt was rightfully named Player of the Match for his outstanding century.

The series, now tied, promises more thrilling action as England faces West Indies again on Tuesday, December 18, in Trinidad. Cricket enthusiasts can expect an intense battle as both teams aim to gain the upper hand in this fiercely contested T20I series.
