Amid the debate over India’s next captain, former skipper Sourav Ganguly has staunchly backed Rohit Sharma to lead the side till the T20 World Cup in 2024. Ever since India’s loss to Australia at the World Cup 2023 finals, there has been a buzz around who will take over the reigns from the Hitman. Ganguly backs Rohit Sharma to continue as India captain

Speaking at an event, Sourav Ganguly opined that Rohit Sharma should captain India once he returns to playing all three formats of the game. Lavishing praise on his performance in the World Cup, Ganguly called Sharma a leader, noting that he expects and presumes that the Hitman will be India’s skipper till T20 World Cup.

The chatter around Rohit’s captaincy was reignited after India’s World Cup final loss. The side’s ICC trophy drought continues, with their last victory coming at the Champions Trophy in 2013. Rohit Sharma-Kohli requested a break: BCCI

“Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had requested the board for a break from the white-ball leg of the tour,” BCCI said in a statement.

In Rohit Sharma’s absence, Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side in the three-match T20I series beginning in Durban on December 10. On the other hand, wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul will take charge for the three ODIs.

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been left out of the white-ball series against South Africa. The duo did not feature in the T20s against Australia as well, with most senior players being rested.
