Heart is with RCB: AB de Villiers hints at return to Royal Challengers Bangalore

De Villiers, who played for the Bengaluru franchise for 14 seasons, retired from all forms of cricket in 2021.

Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers on Saturday said he would love to return to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in some capacity in the future. De Villiers, who played for the Bengaluru franchise for 11 seasons, retired from all forms of cricket in 2021.

Since his retirement, fans have been waiting for Ab de Villiers to reunite with Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL. While there were rumours of him joining RCB as a mentor, it quickly died down. Instead, AB de Villiers returned to say goodbye to the fans last season. However, he is looking forward to joining RCB in some capacity in near future.

I hope so. My heart is with RCB, having played there for many many years. I have got a very good connection with the fans of Bangalore,” AB De Villiers told India Today in an interview.

“I’ve always appreciated all the support and love over the years. I can’t guarantee anything. But I would absolutely love to see myself in the RCB colours in the future,” the former Proteas captain added.

De Villiers was one of the most popular cricketers of RCB, having played 11 seasons for the franchise. The 360 degree batter, as he was called for his capacity to hit shots at any part of the ground, played a whopping 184 matches for the Bengaluru outfit.

De Villiers scored over 5000 runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL. He scored those runs at a healthy strike rate of over 151. He maintained an average of just under 40 and was a livewire on the field.

However despite his heroics, he could not guide the RCB to any IPL trophy. If De Villiers in indeed seen in RCB colours in the future, it can be expected that the South African great will look to get his hands on the elusive trophy.
