In the unpredictable world of sports, where triumph and tribulation often walk hand in hand, Dipa Karmakar stands as a symbol of resilience and determination. The star Indian gymnast, who experienced the pinnacle of success with a fourth-place finish at the Rio Olympics in 2016, is on a mission that seems nothing short of impossible – vowing to retire only after clinching an Olympic medal, this time in Paris.
Dipa Karmakar’s journey has been marked by highs and lows, with the latter sometimes overshadowing her remarkable achievements. Two ACL surgeries on her knee, requiring ligament transplants, and a 21-month ban due to a failed dope test tested not just her physical strength but her mental fortitude as well.
Speaking at an event in Kolkata, Dipa Karmakar acknowledged the challenges she faced but exuded determination. “I’m fully fit now. I had taken to (Produnova) vault fully aware of the injuries that I might have to face,” she shared as per PTI. “But I’m giving my 100 percent and doing a lot of hard work under my coach (Bishweshwar Nandi), so that I can overcome this and win one medal, then only I will retire from gymnastics.”
Dipa Karmakar remains resolute for Paris Olympics
Despite missing the World Championships in Belgium in October, Dipa Karmakar remains resolute about her Paris Olympics aspirations. Acknowledging the tough road to qualification, she stays positive and focuses on her training in Agartala under the guidance of coach Nandi.
“To qualify for the Olympics is very tough now. But you never know if they allow one country…I’m keeping my fingers crossed and giving my best at training,” she expressed.
Karmakar faced another setback as her name was dropped from the Hangzhou Asian Games squad due to eligibility criteria. However, her response reflects a mature understanding of the unpredictability of sports.
“It’s part of life. It will be good for the future. Whatever you have thought, something positive must have transpired. I don’t have any problem with it. For a couple of days, I was down but my coach and parents were there to boost me. It’s sport, you lose some and you win some. I just have to give my best,” she concluded.
Dipa Karmakar’s journey is more than a sporting tale; it’s a testament to resilience, courage, and an indomitable spirit that refuses to bow down to challenges. As she sets her sights on an Olympic medal, fans can only cheer for this gymnastics icon who continues to embody the essence of a true sports warrior.
