Australian wicketkeeper-batter Ben McDermott on Sunday excelled in an otherwise drab Australia batting performance in the IND vs AUS 5th T20I. The top order batter’s 54 runs of 36 balls will send the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams on red alert ahead of the IPL 2024 Auction scheduled on December 19 in Dubai. McDermott came out to bat at No 3 and played some good shots to bring up his half-century before departing of the bowling of Arshdeep Singh.
Ben McDermott’s innings surprisingly had no fours but consisted of 5 sixes. His gritty knock shows can be an intelligent answer for IPL teams looking to buy an explosive top order batter at the IPL 2024 Auction. Moreover, his five sixes came in different directions, standing as a testament to his versatility. He hit two sixes over long-on, one over deep extra cover and a couple over deep square-leg. His expansive array of shots can be an added incentive for IPL teams looking to buy him.
However, McDermott’s IPL auction experience hasn’t been the best. He went unsold in IPL 2022 auction, and withdrew himself from the 2023 edition. This time though, the keeper-batter will be available for teams at IPL 2024 auction. His base price is yet unknown but after the pacy innings which helped Australia reach closer to India’s 161 run target, it will not be a surprise if a tug of war between IPL teams ensue after his name is called.
Ben McDermott’s BBL dominance
McDermott has proven himself as an explosive T20 batter in Big Bash League. The batter has scored 2139 runs in 74 matches in his BBL career at a strike rate of over 138. In BBL’s last edition, the batter finished as the highest run scorer of the tournament, scoring 577 runs in 13 matches at a high strike rate of over 153.
It now remains to be seen how this 54-run innings impacts McDermott’s future in the IPL 2024 auction.
