ENG vs WI: Jos Buttler becomes only 5th England batter to score 5000 ODI runs

Jos Buttler became only the fifth England batter to score 5000 ODI runs as he registered a half-century in the 2nd ENG vs WI ODI

England captain Jos Buttler achieved a rare feat as he became the 5th England batsman to score 5000 ODI runs. Bouncing back after poor scores in his last few games, Buttler smashed a half-century in the 2nd ODI of ENG vs WI series. Former skipper Eoin Morgan tops the list of most ODI runs scored by an England batter.

Buttler’s 58-run knock came off 45 deliveries and was laced with four boundaries and three sixes. The England skipper has scored 5,022 runs at an average of 39.85 and a strike rate of over 117.

In his last 10 ODI outings prior to this game, the England skipper managed to score just 141 runs, with an average of mere 14.10. He failed to fire even at the World Cup 2023 where defending champions England performed miserably and were shunted out at the league stage.

West Indies was asked to bat first by England. After being reduced to 23/4, a 129-run partnership between skipper Shai Hope (68 in 68 balls) and Sherfane Rutherford (63 in 71 balls) helped the Windies make a comeback. But after the breaking of this partnership, another collapse followed, sinking the Men in Maroon to 202/10 in 39.4 overs.

Sam Curran (3/33) and Liam Livingstone (3/39) were the pick of the bowlers for England. Gus Atkinson and teen spinner Rehan Ahmed got two scalps each.

In the chase of 203, Phil Salt (21 in 15 balls) and Will Jacks stitched a fifty-run opening stand. After some quick wickets, including Jacks for 73 off 72 balls with six fours and four sixes, Buttler along with Brook (43* in 49 balls) helped England to the target with six wickets and over 17 overs left.
