Ignored again & again! Sri Lanka Women’s team skipper Chamari Athapaththu has gone unsold in WPL 2024 Auction. After being ignored in WPL 2023, the Lankan skipper kept her base price at a nominal rate of 30 lakhs. Yet she found no takers. The star all-rounder was ignored for a second time running in the Women’s Premier League.
Expectations were sky high that Chamari Athapaththu would go for big bucks. But alas, the Lankan skipper went unsold during the opening phase of the auction. What is even more surprising that her name was not sought by any of the teams during the accelerated phase of the auction, towards the end of the day.
Disappointment Continues for Chamari Athapaththu!
After getting no takes in the inaugural WPL auction, she didn’t find a team throughout the season in T20 cricket. She was hung out to dry in the Women’s Hundred, the Women’s Big Bash League, and the Women’s Caribbean Premier League. But the Lankan skipper made a strong comeback with other national colours.
She hammered 2 unbeaten tons against New Zealand as Sri Lanka registered their maiden ODI series win over the Kiwis. In T20Is she carried the charge against England. Courtesy of her fiery form she received a late call in the Big Bash League as an injury replacement. In WBBL, she unleashed her fury.
She amassed 552 runs, the second-highest run-getter, and scalped 9 wickets in the process which made her the Player of the Series.
