Manchester City honour club greats Summerbee, Bell and Lee with new statue

A new Manchester City statue honouring greats like Mike Summerbee, Colin Bell, and Francis Lee has been unveiled by the club.

A new Manchester City statue honouring Mike Summerbee, Colin Bell, and Francis Lee has been unveiled by the club. The club decided to honour club legends like Mike Summerbee, Colin Bell, and Francis Lee by building a statue for the them on the West side of the Etihad stadium. The Permanent bronze statue made to honour them features Mike Summerbee, Colin Bell, and Francis Lee in dynamic poses which display their styles of play.

Summerbee, Bell, and Lee were important players in Manchester City side which won the First Division title.  Manchester City won the First Division title in 1967-68. This was just their second First Division title. City has also come second in the previous season. This team with Summerbee, Bell, and Lee also win the FA Cup in the 1968-69 season and both the European Cup Winners’ Cup and League Cup in 1970.

The Manchester City statue honours all 29 players who were a part of this team during the title winning era. All their names are inscribed on a bronze plate on the statue’s base. This statue is a new addition to a series of tributes the club has made to honour past players. Manchester City have also commissioned the statues of club legends like Vincent Kompany, David Silva, and Sergio Kun Aguero in recent years.

Mike Summerbee who is one of the legends honoured with the new statue still remains at Manchester City as the club ambassador. Summerbee is 80 years old now but is still connected with Manchester City. Summerbee scored 67 goals in 449 appearances for the club. Mike Summerbee spoke about the new statue honouring him and his teammates.

Summerbee said:

“This is a truly special moment for me and my family. I joined Manchester City in 1965 and it is the best decision I could have possibly made. Fifty years later I am still here, still treated with such respect. I feel incredibly lucky to be recognised in this way, amongst friends whose contribution to our history this club never forgets, despite the amazing success we have enjoyed in recent years. It is an honour to be part of this extraordinary club.”

Manchester City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak also spoke about this new statue.

Khaldoon Al Mubarak said:

“This statue honours three players who are unquestionably City legends and have deservedly earned a special place in the history of the club and hearts of the whole City family.”
