Paris Saint-Germain supporters stormed into a bar full of Newcastle United fans in Paris ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League group game in the French capital. The supporters of the French club vandalised the bar trying to hurt Newcastle fans, threw chairs and beer mugs at the visiting lot. This is not the first time the supporters of the two clubs engaged in violence, similar incidents took place ahead and after Newcastle’s UCL home match against PSG in October.
Social media footage has surfaced in which supporters of Paris Saint-Germain, dressed in black apparel and wearing masks, appear to have hurled flares and chairs into the windows of an establishment in Paris.
One video showed Newcastle supporters defending themselves as PSG supporters tried to storm the door of the bar, throwing glasses and smashing windows as hecklers hurled abuse at one another.
The police had requested that the designated bars for Newcastle supporters close early due to concerns regarding potential clashes between opposing fan groups.
The Newcastle United Supporters’ Club, which represents 7,000 members across 30 countries, posted on X: “Stay safe in Paris tonight. Stick together and look after each other.”
Violence galore
Prior to the match, there were rumors circulating on social media about the presence of so-called PSG ultras. Subsequent social media accounts, however, appeared to downplay the extent of the violence, claiming that fans had dispersed when they were unable to enter the bar.
The outbreak of violence in France occurred in the wake of separate incidents involving PSG supporters prior to and following Newcastle’s 4-1 victory over the French club at St James’ Park in the month of October.
An unknown gang ambushed a Newcastle supporter when the latter returned to their hotel in Milan following the club’s first Champions League match in 20 years in September, resulting in a stabbing.
The Newcastle fan was walking home in Milan’s Navigli district, where the majority of supporters had gathered, when he was accosted by a group of about seven or eight people.
