The trend among general public of India and Pakistan nowadays to celebrate each other’s shortcomings in cricket has irked former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram, who dismissed this kind of behavior as unacceptable. He further said he failed to understand the point of celebrating each other’s losses. His statement comes at a time when the 2025 Champions Trophy, that was supposed to be held in Pakistan, is all set to be moved. India’s stance of not wanting to travel to Pakistan may force ICC to move the tournament. The decision is sure to add more animosity for India in Pakistan.
This is not the first time a former cricketer has slammed this trend. Gautam Gambhir criticised this kind of behaviour some days ago. Pakistan legend Wasim Akram joined Gambhir in questioning the motive behind these celebrations on Monday. He used an idiom to describe the behaviour.

“Seeing the way India and Pakistan celebrate each other’s losses, I can only think of the phrase, ‘Begaani shaadi mein abdulla deewana‘ (to revel at someone else’s misfortune),” Wasim Akram said at an interview.
Akram also pointed finger at some famous personalities of both countries without naming any particular person.
“I am not naming anyone, but there are a few famous people in both countries who sometimes don’t help the cause. You are patriotic for your country, and we are for ours. Let’s finish it there. Just be nice to each other at a time when everyone is struggling. At the end of the day, it’s just a game,” he added.

After winning the Champions Trophy in its last edition in 2017, Pakistan were hoping to host the tournament in 2025. However, India is unlikely to change its stance of not travelling to Pakistan given the two countries’ political issues. If the tournament is indeed moved elsewhere, the trend of reveling in each other’s losses is expected to rise in the coming days.
