After a lot of speculation about his future in the last few days, Indian player Prithvi Shaw on Sunday was retained by the Delhi Capitals. The news is certain to come as a huge boost for the Mumbai batter. Prithvi has steadily fallen down the pecking order in the Indian set-up due to off-field and on-field issues. Former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble on Sunday pointed out fitness as the issue Prithvi Shaw should concentrate on to get his career back on track.

He’s still young but he needs to work on his fitness. If Ricky Ponting, Sourav Ganguly, David Warner can’t get him to work on his fitness then it’s a challenge,” Anil Kumble said on JioCinema.

Prithvi Shaw burst on to the Indian scene as a 14-year-old. He scored an unprecedented 546 runs in Mumbai’s Harris Shield. He followed it up with several other notable knocks, including tons on debut in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy and 2017 Duleep Trophy.

This was the second time a debutant batsman had scored centuries in both the formats. The first player to attain this feat was Sachin Tendulkar. With the performance, he drew immense comparisons to the little master and was touted as one of India’s future batting superstars.

However, since making his debut for India in 2018, he has struggled with form and fitness. Delhi Capitals have kept their faith on him this year, in spite of several average performances throughout the course of years.

Shubman miles ahead of Prithvi Shaw

Speaking about Prithvi Shaw, Anil Kumble said, “Prithvi Shaw has to look at his fitness. I think that’s something that is constantly spoken about. It’s not about his cricketing skills. Yes, there might be some chinks in his armour like all batters do. We’ve seen that he’s someone who can take the game away in the T20 format.

Kumble also drew Prithvi Shaw’s comparison with his contemporary Shubman Gill. Both started their careers around the same time. But while Gill has established himself as a vital cog in the national team while Shaw’s form has been questionable.

This is something that he needs to understand. Players that have played with him have gone ahead . For example Shubman Gill, who is one of India’s best players. A young player who is looking at a future with the team for a long time. And Shaw has missed out on that. So this is simply a make or break season for him,” Kumble said.
