Barcelona could receive millions of euros from FIFA after their midfielder Gavi sustained a season-ending knee injury during Spain’s Euro 2024 qualifying game against Georgia.

The 19-year old has torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), Barcelona confirmed in a statement. Gavi will undergo undergo surgery in the next few days and begin his long path to recovery. Gavi had played in Spain’s last 27 competitive matches since Luis de la Fuente took charge of Spain. He has also been a steady figure in the Barcelona starting XI.

While it is impossible for Xavi, his Barcelona staff, or the Barca supporters to find anything positive from the statement of Barcelona, the Barca board can receive a hefty amount as a form of compensation from FIFA.

Gavi’s recovery is expected to take anything between seven to nine months. It means the midfielder will be out for the entirety of the remaining season. According to a report from Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, FIFA has to cover the costs incurred by clubs who lose a player for a period longer than 28 days due to their national team commitments.

Since Gavi’s recovery will take much more than 28 days, FIFA will pay the Blaugrana at least a sum of €3 million in compensation, said the same report. The report further said that FIFA will begin to pay Barcelona on December 16. The club will be paid €20,548 a day for a total of 365 days. FIFA can pay clubs up to €7.5 million per player.

The news will do little to lighten the spirits of Barca faithful because while the money will certainly help Barça, Gavi’s absence from the club for the remainder of the campaign could lead to serious sporting issues.
