Barcelona and Spain midfielder Gavi sustained an ACL injury in Spain’s 3-1 win over Georgia in their last qualifying Group A game for Euro 2024. While earlier, the extent of the injury was not confirmed, La Liga club FC Barcelona revealed that the midfielder has sustained an ACL injury. This means Gavi is set to be on the sidelines for the rest of the season and is likely to miss the Euro 2024.

Spain had already qualified for the finals before Sunday’s game, winning seven of their last eight games. Their only loss came against second-place Scotland, who finished with 17 points after their 3-3 draw with Norway.

However, it was the ‘most bitter’ win of Luis De la Fuente’s managerial career, after 19-year old Gavi limped off the field in tears in the first half, clutching his knee in agony.

Feels like we lost the game: De la Fuente

“It is a very difficult moment for Gavi, Barcelona, the national team and for me, it seems as if we have lost the game,” De la Fuente said after the match.

This is the ugly part of football. I am very sorry. Let’s wait for the tests to confirm the extent of the injury. This is the most bitter victory I have ever experienced in my life,” De la Fuente added.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation also confirmed Gavi suffered a serious injury to his right knee in a statement.

“It’s a serious injury to his right knee, but we need to wait to see how bad it actually is,” the statement read.
