Manchester United midfielder and captain Bruno Fernandes has given his seal of approval to the Red Devils in their pursuit of signing Benfica forward Joao Neves.

Man United has already made inquiries about the Portuguese international ahead of the January transfer window. United’s scouts have been keeping an eye on the forward since the turn of the year when he turned 19.

The Red Devils were tracking Neves at the start of the month when Benfica hosted bitter rivals Sporting Lisbon. Neves did not hurt his chances of signing for United either with a stoppage-time equaliser. And now United skipper Fernandes has backed a switch for his Portugal international.

It has to be the Man United coach who says whether he has a place or not,” Fernandes told Sport TV while on international duty. “He’s a great player, I don’t know if he would have a place or not. It depends on the coach and his ideas.

After breaking into the first-team at Benfica, Neves went on to play 38 times for the Portuguese club, scoring twice. His on-the-ball calmness and eye for goal has made him an instant fan favourite. Neves has just under five years remaining on his contract at the Estadio da Luz, and Benfica is expected to put on a hefty price tag on the Portuguese when clubs around Europe come calling in the winter transfer window or next summer.
