Indian opener Shubman Gill will have the chance to surpass Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar for a unique record. With 1580 runs in 2023 already, Gill can surpass Sachin for most runs amassed in a calendar year before turning 25. Sachin Tendulkar scored 1,611 runs in 1996. It must be mentioned that Sachin was the highest run-getter in that year’s World Cup.
Most runs in a calendar year ODIs:
- Sachin Tendulkar (1996): 1,611 runs
- Shubman Gill (2023): 1,580 runs*
- Virat Kohli (2011): 1381 runs
- Mahela Jayawardene (2001): 1,260 runs
- Kane Williamson (2015): 1,224 runs
After all these years, Sachin still holds the record of scoring most runs in a calendar year after amassing 1,611 runs. One of the main reason for that was Sachin’s golden run in the World Cup. The talisman scored 523 runs at an astonishing average of 87.17 in just seven matches. Despite such a brilliant performance, team India went on to lose the final match against Sri Lanka.
Gill 31 runs behind Tendulkar
Sachin’s record can be broken in the final match if Shubman Gill scores 31 runs against Australia in the World Cup final. Gill looked in excellent touch in the semi-final match against New Zealand. However, the right-handed batter missed out on a well-deserved century after suffering cramps. The young batter will look to replicate his semi-final antics at the Narendra Modi Stadium as India dreams to end their 10-year long drought of winning an ICC trophy.
