Luis Diaz’s father was in the stands and could not hold back his tears watching his son score two goals in the space of three minutes to give Colombia a 2-1 win over Brazil on Wednesday. After being freed from his kidnappers two days ago, Luis Manuel Díaz, who had been held captive for 12 days, watched his son become the hero of the day with a remarkable performance.

Diaz scored a dramatic brace against his Liverpool teammate and Brazil keeper Alisson in the 76th and 78th minutes of the World Cup qualifying game to turn the tide around for the Columbians.

His father was so overcome with emotion that he nearly fell to the ground after Diaz scored the second goal as he was surrounded by fans in a sea of jubilation. A video taken by a fan showed him slumped down from the seat, overcome with emotion.

Before the start of the match, he greeted fans who had gathered to welcome him to the stadium in Barranquilla.

Diaz was the star of Colombia’s attack, almost single-handedly. The striker came close to scoring when he dribbled past a pair of Brazilians. But he couldn’t beat Allison. He was denied twice by Alisson in second-half too, before going on to score the equaliser and the winner.

Diaz finally scored his first of the match in the 75th minute, putting the ball in the net with a header from a corner. He then scored the winner two minutes later to send the crowd into a frenzy.
