AC Milan defender Alessandro Florenzi on Thursday arrived at the Public Prosecutor’s office in Turin to provide his deputation in the ongoing investigation into illegal betting. The probe has taken Italian football by storm with several footballers under the microscope for alleged breach of betting rules in Italy. The probe has seen Newcastle and Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali being banned for 10 months. While Nicolo Fagioli has been banned for seven months.

Alessandro Florenzi in trouble?

Now, the investigation has led to Milan footballer Alessandro Florenzi. According to a report from Football Italia, Florenzi has currently reached the office of the Public Prosecutor in Turin. The Italy international will presumably be engaged for quite a few hours to answer the questions of the investigators.

However, the charges against Florenzi so far relate only to video poker and blackjack and not to betting on sports. If that is the case, the defender could get away with just a fine rather than a full fledged ban.

The Italian authorities also questioned Nicolo Zaniolo on the same accusation a while back. The player had explained that he only played poker and blackjack, which is not in contravention of the Sports Justice Code. It remains to be seen if Florenzi will have the same defence.

Even though the accusations do not relate to football betting, Zaniolo and Florenzi could still face serious consequences if they were found to have used illegal websites to engage in online gambling.
