Pakistan’s exit from the World Cup has divided the cricketing World. Fingers are pointing toward Babar Azam, who for his lofty standards, did not perform as per fans’ and experts’ expectations. While few of the critics feel captaincy is affecting Babar, former World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev feels the Pakistani skipper should be backed during his low time irrespective of his performance.
In a video that is going viral, Kapil Dev urged people to stand by Babar by saying, “Today you will say Babar is not performing well because you are seeing the current situation. But the same captain made Pakistan the number-one team six months back. When someone makes zero, 99% of people will say drop him and will back an ordinary player who scores a century saying, he is the next superstar.
So don’t go with current performances. Look at how he has approached the game, how he plays in tough situations is how a player should be judged rather than one or two low scores.”

Kapil Dev’s strong words for Babar prove he does not need anyone to prove how good a player he is. The Pakistani skipper was the third leading run-scorer for Pakistan, scoring 250 runs. He scored only three fifties and blew hot and cold in the WC. Worst, field noise also hogged in Babar’s case as there were reports of his not-so-good relationship with PCB chief Zaka Ashraf.
Will Babar Azam remain as a captain after the World Cup debacle?
Azam has led Pakistan to three ICC events so far, and he has failed to cross the last hurdle. He has lost two T20 World Cups one in semis, and the last T20 World Cup final against England. The 28-year-old also has lost two Asia Cups, and now the latest is a group stage exit in the 50-over World Cup. Speculations are rife that Azam may be removed from ODI or T20 captaincy.
Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan are two players to replace Azam. However, PCB are yet to make an official announcement on the same.
