Gabriel Jesus enroute to join Brazil squad despite carrying hamstring injury

Brazil’s medical team will have a thorough examination of Jesus after he arrives and a decision will be taken as to whether he can play

Despite not featuring for Arsenal for almost three weeks, Gabriel Jesus has left for Brazil to play for the national team, according to The Standard. The striker suffered a hamstring injury playing for Arsenal against Sevilla in a UEFA Champions League tie on 24th October.

Since then, Jesus has been working on his fitness with the club and has now missed all of their games, including Saturday’s 3-1 thrashing of Burnley. Despite this, the striker was recalled to Brazil’s squad last week and has now flown to South America to join the team.

Brazil’s medical team will have a thorough examination of Jesus after he arrives and a decision will be taken as to whether he can play. Calling up Jesus is testimony to the fact that the Brazil medical team feels Jesus will be available.

According to FIFA regulations, Brazil have the right to recall Jesus and evaluate him on their own. England evoked this right last month with Bukayo Saka.

However, that was not the case here, as Saka only had to travel from London to the England team’s home ground in St. George’s Park, while Jesus had to travel to Brazil.

Brazil’s will play two World Cup qualifying matches in this international break. They take on Colombia on Saturday, November 17, followed by the blockbuster clash with Lionel Messi’s Argentina on Sunday, November 22.

I like Gabriel Jesus a lot: Diniz

Insidesport

Brazil manager Fernando Diniz indicated they would recall Jesus to evaluate him themselves when he named the national squad on Monday.

“In the last call-up, we hadn’t called up [Gabriel] Martinelli, from Arsenal,” he said. “He didn’t report to the CBF (Brazilian Football Federation) in a very complete way, so we didn’t imagine that Martinelli would be ready to play against Venezuela and Uruguay, and he was ready to play before our games.

Because of this too, we are going to bring Gabriel [Jesus] to find out the real conditions, because we still have 15 days until the games, so we believe that he can be able to play, because I like him a lot,” he had said.
