Rachin Ravindra may be playing for New Zealand, but he is a true blue Indian when the Kiwi jersey is off. The proof of that was evidenced when the southpaw visited his grandparents’ home in Bengaluru. The 22-year-old quietly sitting in front of his grandmother when she was doing an age-old tradition of ‘Nazar Utharo’ (Keep evil things away from Rachin). The Kiwi all-rounder adorably kept looking at his grandmother and melted the internet with a heartwarming video.
One of the netizens shared the video on social media as Rachin and his grandmother had a moment to savor. In India, it is a tradition to follow this custom with young kids and children so that no evil things have an effect on them. With Rachin being the leading run scorer in the tournament, scoring 565 runs, the grandmother thought it was best to keep Rachin’s form going.
This culture is very popular throughout India and there are different words to describe it. In Hindi, it’s called Nazar Utharna/Nazar Nikala in Tamil, it is Sutti Podu and in Kannada, it’s called Drushti tegiyodu. Since Ravindra is from Karnataka and a very orthodox family, his grandmother thought it the best time to bless his grandson.
