Manchester United have a “mountain to climb” if they are to keep their Champions League campaign alive, according to Bruno Fernandes. This revelation came in the aftermath of Wednesday’s shocking late loss in Copenhagen. The Red Devils captain reverted back to former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to keep the morale high.
“We have a mountain to climb, so we must climb,” Captain Fernandes told after the defeat at Parken. “We have two games and we have to win those two games.”
The Red Devils lost 4-3 to Copenhagen in an exciting UEFA Champions League match at Parken Stadium. A night that started with a brace from talented Rasmus Hojlund finished in a humiliating loss.
Marcus Rashford’s controversial red card late in the first half ignited the game. Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty after Lukas Lerager touched the ball in the box to make it 3-2 in the 69th minute.
Copenhagen, on the other hand, scored twice in a row to take all three points. Man United manager Erik ten Hag was also dissatisfied with the decision and challenged the Copenhagen goals.
“Before tonight, our aim already was to win our remaining three games. We couldn’t win today. We have to win the next two. You have to win them if you want to keep in the Champions League and stay in the best competition.” Fernandes continued on the note.
The Man United are now bottom of their group in the Champions League and risk an early departure from the big tournament. A loss at Galatasaray can seal the exit before playing already-qualified leaders Bayern Munich in their last match.
While the hopes seem to be over for the Red Devil, Captain Bruno Fernandes seems to draw confidence and motivation from none other than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Often touted as Ole’s favourite signing, Bruno Fernandes has turned up big for the club.
Wheeling back at 2019, Manchester United were on the brink of the Champions League exit with a 2-0 loss against PSG. During the post-match conference a very confident Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “Mountains are there to be climbed,”.
“We can’t lay down and say it’s over. We have to believe in ourselves and learn from today,” added Ole.
While Ole is not “at the wheel” of Manchester United anymore. Ole was succeeded by Erik ten Hag. However, it says volumes about the impact Ole had on Captain Bruno and the entire Manchester United squad. Manchester United’s 2023-24 season has been a letdown in more ways than one. They have lost nine of their seventeen games in all competitions.
