Kolkata or Mumbai? India World Cup semis venue fate hanging on Pakistan, Know why

An intriguing twist arises if Pakistan secures the fourth spot among the semifinalists.

Rohit Sharma-led India has carved an impressive path in the 2023 ODI World Cup, becoming the first team to secure a coveted spot in the semifinals. The hosts have been in spectacular form, remaining unbeaten throughout their journey, with eight victories in as many games. Their commanding performance has positioned them at the top of the points table, ensuring they finish the league stage as the number one-ranked team.

However, despite their unassailable position on the points table, there’s still an air of uncertainty regarding where the dynamic Indian team will play their semifinal match. This uncertainty is due to a unique arrangement set by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) before the tournament, at the request of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

World Cup Venue Conundrum: Kolkata or Mumbai

Typically, the first-ranked team in the points table would square off against the fourth-ranked side in the first semifinal, and this match would be hosted in Mumbai. The second semifinal, featuring the second and third-ranked teams, was originally slated for the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

However, an intriguing twist arises if Pakistan secures the fourth spot among the semifinalists. For security reasons, PCB had made a request that any Pakistan matches should not be held in the city of Mumbai. This request was honored and led to the creation of a unique scenario.

If India and Pakistan occupy the first and fourth positions in the semifinal lineup, the first semifinal will shift to Kolkata, scheduled for November 15. Consequently, the second semifinal will be relocated to Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on the following day, contrary to the original plans.

The uncertainty surrounding the venue stems from the earlier agreement between the ICC, BCCI, and PCB to prioritize Pakistan’s security concerns. This arrangement has raised questions about where the highly anticipated clash involving Pakistan will occur, adding an intriguing element to the tournament.

Battle for the Fourth Spot

At the moment, New Zealand and Afghanistan are the front-runners challenging Pakistan for the fourth spot in the semifinals. The outcome of the remaining matches will determine who secures this coveted position.

Other Semifinal Showdown: South Africa vs Australia

While the venue for India’s semifinal match remains uncertain, the other semifinal match is already set. The second and third-ranked teams in the points table, South Africa and Australia, are gearing up for an epic showdown as they prepare to battle it out for a place in the 2023 ODI World Cup final.

India’s journey to the ODI World Cup semifinals is a testament to their exceptional form in the tournament. However, the unique venue arrangement, driven by security concerns, adds an element of intrigue and suspense to the semifinals. Cricket fans eagerly await the final line-up and venue announcements as the competition continues to unfold.
