Shakib Al Hasan ruled out of Cricket World Cup – Here’s why

Bangladesh cricket team skipper Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of the Cricket World Cup after suffering a injury to his left Index finger during BAN vs SL on Monday.

An X-ray after the game confirmed a fracture which has ruled him out of BAN vs AUS in Pune on 11 November.

National Team Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan gave further details on the injury.

“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers,” he said.

“He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab.”

Notably, the Bangladesh team are already out of out of World Cup 2023 semi-final contention but the match will be crucial for their Champions Trophy 2025 qualification.

Top 7 teams and host nation Pakistan will qualify for the Champions Trophy tournament set to be played in 2025.

Bangladesh are currently 8th on the points table and a win against Australia will ensure their qualification for the ICC tournament.

“Absolutely disgraceful“

The Tigers’ already disastrous run in the tournament was marred with controversies. The recent one came on Monday in the game against Sri Lanka when Sri Lankan batter Angelo Mathews was given ‘timed out’ in the game after team’s appeal.

“Absolutely disgraceful. We all play to win but I never thought a team or player would stoop to such levels to get a wicket,” Mathews told the media after the game.

However, Shakib defended his decision and said that he has “no regrets”.

“I have no regrets. I have been playing against Angelo since our U-19 days. It was 2006 when we played against each other for the first time. What happened was unfortunate for him, but rules are rules,” he said.
