‘Just pathetic’ Piers Morgan blasts VAR after goal decision against Arsenal

Morgan is a known Arsenal supporter and termed the technology as the 'man of the match'

The Newcastle vs Arsenal match in the Premier League threw up a huge controversy over Video Assistant Referee (VAR) again. Newcastle’s only goal in the second half of the match was looked at by the VAR for a number of offences. However, the goal was allowed, resulting in a lot of football enthusiasts and professionals including Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta blasting the VAR because of the decision. Some famous Arsenal faithful also joined the list, including famous journalist Piers Morgan.

Morgan is a known and vocal Arsenal supporter. He joined in bashing the VAR for the decision after the match, terming the technology as the ‘man of the match’.

Morgan took to X (formerly Twitter) to air his frustration. Morgan released a series of tweets. He wrote, “So we all just watched the ball go out of play, then Gabriel get fouled, and then a clear offside. But VAR still gave Newcastle the goal. Just pathetic.”

Notably, the VAR first looked for the ball being out of play leading to the goal. Then, there was doubt about Joelington pushing Arsenal defender Gabriel to the ground. The VAR also had a look for Joelington handling the ball and Gordon being offside while scoring the goal. Arsenal fans alleged that the VAR gave the decision in favour of the home team without properly looking at the infringements.

Morgan then went on to express his dissatisfaction with VAR, as well as taking a dig at Arteta and then at Kai Havertz.

He wrote, “VAR was MoM for Newcastle but we deserved to lose. Arsenal were dreadful. Only Rice, again, deserves any praise. So long as we have no proper striker, and Arteta persists in this ridiculous Havertz farce, we won’t win the League.”

“Arteta’s absolutely losing his s***, and he’s right about VAR being a disgrace and embarrassment.. BUT we were still cr*p, and didn’t deserve to win. And HIS inexplicable decisions re Havertz & Raya, and not buying a top striker, are hurting us,” he added.
