Lionel Messi won his eighth Ballon d’Or last Monday. The Argentine forward played a leading role in helping Argentina lift the 2022 FIFA World Cup in December. The Inter Miami forward scored seven times in the World Cup and took home the Golden Ball trophy for being the best player of the World Cup. The Argentine also won the Ligue 1 with Paris Saint Germain and moved to Inter Miami in the summer of 2023. He helped Inter Miami lift their first silverware in the club’s history, winning the trophy with the Herons.
Aitana Bonmati of Spain won the Ballon d’Or féminin award in the same night. The Ballon d’Or Féminin honours the female football player deemed to have performed the best over the previous season. Bonmatí won the La Liga title and his second Champions League title with Barcelona, after a dramatic comeback against Wolfsburg in the final. Bonmati also enjoyed success with the national team, winning the World Cup with Spain for the first time. She also excelled in the individual front, being named the tournament’s best player.
The Ballon d’Or magazine’s cover, released from the official X (previously twitter) handle of Ballon d’Or, featured both Messi and Bonmati. The caption of the post read, “The cover you’ve all been waiting for! France Football Ballon d’Or special issue, available this Saturday.”
