In a ceremony in Paris on Monday, Messi won the award for a record-breaking eighth time. Messi led Argentina to their second World Cup title after 36 years last December.

Notably, the Ballon d’Or is a prestigious award given to the best football player of the year by France football. The award is given based on votes by over 100 journalists from all parts of the world.

Messi won the award by beating out the likes of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and Paris Saint Germain attacker Kylian Mbappe. His long-term rival Al Nassr striker Cristiano Ronaldo on the other hand did not make it into the top 30 of the prestigious list for the first time since 2003.

‘Earned, not given’

After Messi’s latest success, Ronaldo’s sister took to social media to express her disapproval of the ex-Barcelona and PSG star.

Katia Aveiro seemed to back a social media post that praised Ronaldo while questioning Messi’s latest Ballon d’Or.

In one Instagram post, Ronaldo was seen surrounded by his personal awards, which include three UEFA Footballer of the Year, four European golden shoes, and five Ballon d’Ors.

The image was accompanied by the caption, “Earned, not given,” in an apparent dig at Messi.

Aveiro liked the post and commented with five clapping emojis, prompting a host of reactions from football lovers all over the world.

Insidesport

It’s not the first time Ronaldo’s sister has waded into modern football’s eternal debate.

Last year, she called the World Cup “the worst ever” before later praising Argentina for an “exciting” final.
