Will MS Dhoni-led CSK release ‘injury-ridden’ Ben Stokes ahead of IPL 2024 Auction?

Ben Stokes is set to undergo knee surgery after the World Cup which will make his availability doubtful for IPL 2024.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) might release England all-rounder Ben Stokes ahead of IPL 2024 auction due to his constant injury issues and a huge price tag. The England all-rounder played just two matches for the franchise last year as he was unavailable due to an injury.

Ben Stokes was seen as MS Dhoni’s successor when he was picked at a whopping Rs 16.25 crore in IPL 2023 auction. However, consistent injuries and his national priority over the league might force the MS Dhoni-led side to look for other suitable options.

With the 32-year-old set to have knee surgery at the end of the World Cup 2023, his availablity for the IPL 2024 is also doubtful.

Stokes has been struggling with the knee problem for last one and a half year and has had to play as a specialist batter but England’s Test skipper now has confirmed that he is set to go under the knife after the World Cup and will be ready for IND vs ENG Test series, starting on January 25, next year.

Notably, Stokes came out of ODI retirement to be part of England’s title defending squad for the World Cup 2023. But a hip injury halted his return for first three matches. He returned for the South Africa encounter but failed to make an impact as the Jos Buttler-led side crumbled.

With the side already out of semi-final contention, Ben Stokes wants to focus on getting back in full fitness.

“I am having surgery after the World Cup. Hopefully, I will be fine for the Test series in India“, Stokes said in press conference ahead of ENG vs AUS clash.

It would be interesting to see what decision CSK head coach Stephen Fleming and captain MS Dhoni will take on Stokes’ retention.
