In a major development, Nepal cricket team has qualified for the 2024 T20 World Cup after a gap of 10 years. To note, Nepal bagged their spot in the T20 World Cup to be played in US and the West Indies in June 2024 after they defeated the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 8 wickets at Mulpani Maidan in Kathmandu on Friday.
Nepal last played in 2014 T20 World Cup
It must be noted that Nepal last participated in the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2014. Additionally, Oman also qualified for the World Cup from the qualifying match held in Kathmandu. While chasing the UAE’s target of 135 runs at Moolpani ground, Nepal’s Ashif Shaikh was the top scorer with 63 runs. Gulshan Jha contributed 22 runs, and Kushal Bhurtel added 11 runs.
Nepal’s Kushal Malla played a big role with the ball as he scalped three wickets to restrict UAE to a modest score. Malla bowled 3 overs and gave away just 11 runs while taking 3 wickets. Similarly, leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane claimed 2 wickets, and Sompal Kami and Rohit Paudel each took 1 wicket. Nepal will face Oman in next game for the title of ICC Men’s World Cup 2024 Asian Zone Qualifiers.
18 teams have now confirmed their places in the main draw of the tournament. Sides who have the tickets in their hands are – West Indies, United States of America, Australia, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ireland, Scotland, Papua New Guinea, Canada, Nepal and Oman.
