Pep Guardiola comes to Erik Ten Hag’s defence ahead of Manchester Derby

Pep Guardiola comes to Erik Ten Hag's rescue ahead of the Manchester Derby, electric clash between Manchester United and Manchester City on 29 October.

Following Manchester United’s terrible start, Pep Guardiola has provided advice on what to do with Erik ten Hag. Pep says Manchester United must leave Erik ten Hag alone if they are to return to the top. On 29th October, the coaches will square off in an electrifying Manchester Derby.

“Nine years. It takes time,” he said, referencing his own success at City. “United can win five or six games in a row and if they do that they will be on top. Leave the manager to the job, like I was allowed to in my first season when we didn’t win. We had 10 or 11 players over 30 so we had to bring energy and quality and invested, like all the teams . They supported me and this is the same. Give time to the managers and they will do it.”

The Red Devils have gotten off to their worst start in 34 years after seven games. They have since won three consecutive games. With a lengthy takeover situation raging in the background, the reason of supporter displeasure has been a lack of success on the pitch. The Manchester City manager, on the other hand, believes that Ten Hag should be left alone if United are to thrive.

City had to watch for decades as United commandeered the Premier League and had success in Europe under Sir Alex Ferguson. However, since City’s takeover in 2008 and Ferguson’s departure in 2013, the Blues have held the top spot in English football. Last season, they won their first Champions League title, matching United’s historic treble from 1999.

While his words were encouraging to his rival, Guardiola was not about to allow United reclaim the top spot. On Sunday, the two city rivals will square off. Guardiola’s players go to Old Trafford in an attempt to keep pace with league leaders Tottenham Hotspur.
