Shakib Al Hasan confirms rift with this player as Bangladesh hit all-time WC low

Shakib Al Hasan is crestfallen after Bangladesh's latest loss to Netherlands which knocked them out of WC. Shakib feels Tamim's absence made a huge impact

Bangladesh’s World Cup campaign has quickly turned from bad to nightmare. The latest nail in the coffin is the loss to Netherlands. Bangladesh’s WC campaign is hanging by a thread, and even if they win all their remaining three games, they still won’t make it to the semifinal. A dejected Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan did not blame the team for their shambolic display but instead blamed the conflict between him and Tamim Iqbal for the team’s poor display in the World Cup.

Shakib Al Hasan said, “The controversy between me and Tamim Iqbal might’ve affected Bangladesh. It’s our worst World Cup performance”.

For the unversed, Shakib was at loggerheads with the selectors when they insisted on picking a half-fit Tamim Iqbal in the 15-member squad for WC. An angry and frustrated Shakib gave an ultimatum to the selectors to not pick half-fit players in the team for WC, or he would leave captaincy. BCB selectors had no option but to pay heed to Shakib’s demands.

As a result, Tamim was dropped from the WC, and Bangladeshi’s second-leading run-scorer and most experienced batter in WCs was overlooked. Shakib feels that might have had a role in the team’s shambolic display in WC as they slipped to the fifth loss in WC.

Shakib Al Hasan-powered Bangladesh crash out of WC

The Bangladesh campaign is all but over. Despite bossing the ICC World Cup Cycle 2019-23, The Men in Green have yet again failed to reach the semi-final. This is the eighth WC Bangladesh has featured, and they have failed to make the last four. This year’s WC performance will hurt Bangladesh and its loyal fans as the showpiece event happened in India. The pitch, condition, and climate are pretty similar back home.

Also, the team had performed well for four years and beat big teams like India and New Zealand in the build-up to the WC. But despite all that, Bangladesh will have to wait for four years to dream of winning the maiden WC.
