Cricket World Cup Semifinal Race LIVE: India almost through, England, Pakistan all but out

The race for the World Cup Semifinal has begun as the likes of India, New Zealand & South Africa are looking as top contenders to qualify for next stage

The ODI World Cup Semifinal Race has begun with hosts India sitting on top of the table. On the other hand, the same cannot be said for the defending champs England and Pakistan who are languishing at the bottom side of the points table. Meanwhile, let us take a look at the semi-final scenarios for every team participating in the World Cup.

India (Five wins, no losses)

As mentioned above, team India are in top-notch form and have won their all five matches in the World Cup so far. India has defeated the likes of Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand so far. Rohit Sharma and Co. will face England in their next match. The India vs England encounter is set to be played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on October 29. The home team will look to win their clash against England to almost seal their semi-final berth.

South Africa (Five wins, one loss)

South Africa have been in phenomenal touch in the World Cup so far. The Proteas side topped the points table after they defeated Pakistan in nail-biter in Chennai. With this win, the Africans have almost sealed their place in the semi-finals. South Africa are slated to face New Zealand, Indian and Afghanistan next.

New Zealand (Four wins one loss)

Despite missing the service of their permanent captain Kane Williamson, New Zealand have been quite impressive in the tournament so far. The Kiwis have only lost against India in World Cup so far. The Blackcaps will face Australia in their next WC match to be played on October 28. After that, New Zealand will face South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka respectively.

Australia (three wins, two losses)

The Australians are certainly back in the World Cup after back to back wins. The former WC champions recently thrashed Netherlands not only to move up in the points table but also boost their net run-rate. The Men in Yellow are will definitely want to continue their winning run against New Zealand as a defeat might hamper their chances of qualifying for the next stage. After facing NZ, Australia cricket team will face England, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka (two wins three losses)

Sri Lanka campaign has also been marred with injuries as their several key players are missing mega event. However, the Asian side recently defeated England as veteran Angelo Mathews returned to the side. Despite earning a big win against England, chances of Sri Lanka look bleak to qualify for the next stage. SL will face Afghanistan, India, New Zealand and Bangladesh in their next matches.

Pakistan (two wins, four losses)

Pakistan are virtually out of the semi-final race after they lost their game against South Africa on Friday. Babar Azam and Co. have managed to secure just two wins and have lost four games now. After the heart-break loss against the Proteas, their campaign seems to be over.

Afghanistan (two wins, three losses)

Afghanistan are well and truly still in the mix to earn a semi-final berth and will likely need to win at least three of their remaining four matches – if not them all – if they are to sneak in. The Afghani side will face the likes of Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Australia and South Africa.

Bangladesh (one win, four losses)

Bangladesh started off their campaign on a winning note against Afghanistan. Since then, the Bangla Tigers have lost four matches on the trot. Bangladesh would need to win all their remaining four matches at the tournament and have other results go their way to have any chance of sneaking into the knockout stage of the event. They will face Netherlands on October 28.

England (one win four losses)

Not much has gone right for the defending champions England in the World Cup so far. The Three Lions have managed to win against Bangladesh so far. Their recent loss against Sri Lanka meant that their title defence is over. England will take on India in their next WC match to be played on October 29 in Lucknow.

Netherlands (one win, four losses)

The crushing loss to Australia all but put an end to Netherlands’ chances of reaching the semi-finals in India, with the Dutch now needing to win all four of their remaining matches to keep alive any slim hopes. The Netherlands will take on Bangladesh in their next World Cup match.
