Indian cricket legend MS Dhoni shared a revelation, disclosing that he had made up his mind to retire immediately after being run out during the 2019 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand. He reflected on that day as the last time he donned the Indian cricket jersey, acknowledging that the defeat in that closely contested match was particularly difficult to bear.

“It’s difficult to control emotions when you lose close games. I keep my plans ready for every game and for me, it was the last game I played for India. I made the announcement a year later but that day, I retired,” MS Dhoni said at an event.
“We were given some gadgets from the trainer and every time I went to him, I handed those gadgets back but he was like, No, no… just keep it. And I thought, how should I tell him that it wasn’t needed anymore, because I didn’t want to announce then,” Dhoni further said.
“When you are high on emotions and the only thing you have done in the last 12-15 years is playing cricket, and then there’s no more chance of representing your country. It’s a thing with sportsperson. So, once I quit cricket, there was no way I could be representing my country again and bring that glory back. So, you are high on emotions that time,” Dhoni added.
MS Dhoni Retirement
In the 2019 World Cup semifinal, with India needing 240 to secure win, MS Dhoni represented the final ray of hope for his team. Unfortunately, Martin Guptill’s throw from a considerable distance struck the stumps, causing Dhoni to fall inches short of the crease, shattering those hopes.
The subsequent visuals were heart-wrenching for every Indian cricket enthusiast. Not only did this dismissal mark the end of India’s prospects in the World Cup, but it also marked the last occasion the world witnessed Dhoni wearing the Indian jersey.
