Wayne Rooney returns to English football as new manager of Birmingham City

After a stint with DC United, Manchester United great Wayne Rooney returns to English football as the new manager of Birmingham City.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has been named as the new manager of Birmingham City. The former Derby County coach makes a return to English Football after signing a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Championship club.

‘I am absolutely delighted to be joining Birmingham City Football Club at such an exciting time. It is very clear that they have a plan and are committed to realising their ambition for the club. We are fully aligned on what is expected. ‘ said Wayne Rooney.

Rooney takes over for John Eustace, who was fired by the Blues on Monday in spite of winning his final two games. Birmingham are sixth in the Championship as the international break approaches.

Former England captain Ashley Cole and John O’Shea will join him. They had spent seven years at Manchester United alongside Rooney. Maik Taylor will stay as Keeper Coach at the club. Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleworth will both join Rooney’s backroom team after working with him at DC United.

‘I have been building my managerial career, putting myself in challenging environments, to get me ready for this opportunity. It’s a project that gives me a sense of purpose and I can’t wait to get started.’ Rooney added.

The 37-year-old quit DC United last weekend and was being considered by Birmingham. Rooney has managerial experience in English football, having spent 2020-21 with crisis-hit Derby County. It will be Rooney’s third managerial position, following stints with the MLS club and Derby County.
