Ahead of England’s international matches against Australia and Italy, Harry Maguire disclosed how David Beckham lent him support. The Manchester United legend got in touch with Maguire after being booed by Scotland supporters during the Three Lions’ 3-1 victory.
“I actually spoke with David Beckham about three weeks ago, after the game. He got in touch with me so it was really nice of him and I really appreciated that. It meant everything.” Maguire stated in this regard.
The fans at Hampden Park booed and taunted the United defender every time he touched the ball throughout the game. On top of that, Maguire scored an own goal worsening the situation. Beckham called Maguire after the game to console him and remind him of his career’s “big moments” to help him get over the sadness.
” I’ve spoken throughout my career about David Beckham being someone I looked up to and watched when I was a young boy. Unfortunately, I didn’t end up on the right wing scoring and assisting as many goals as he has, but he was a big role model when I was growing up.” Harry Maguire added.
Maguire also claimed that the new Netflix documentary series on Beckham has inspired him. Fans slammed the former Manchester United midfielder when Beckham was sent off following England’s World Cup loss to Argentina in 1998.
Beckham stood tall to the situation, though, and did not let the outside commotion interfere with his play. Maguire praised his perseverance and revealed that the Inter Miami co-owner has been a “huge role model” for him since he was a boy.
England boss Gareth Southgate has called up Maguire for the forthcoming friendly against Australia as well as the Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy. If given a chance to play in the two games, the defender will seek to put his best foot forward and turn around his fortunes.
