Major League Cricket, T20 World Cup has bowled USA over. Cricket in Olympics will be back after 128 years. As the host, LA Olympics 2028 has recommended five sports and cricket is one of them. While a final decision will be made in the IOC session in Mumbai next week, hosts’ recommendations do get the nod. Apart from cricket 4 other sports, flag football, lacrosse, squash, as well as baseball and softball will be added to their Summer Olympics Games program.
ICC is delighted with Cricket in Olympics potentially returning in 2028. In a statement, ICC said, “The International Cricket Council (ICC) is delighted at the decision of the organisers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics to recommend cricket for inclusion at the Games.
After a two-year process, in which the ICC worked closely with LA28, the list of sports to be added in LA included cricket, which will now be put forward for approval to the IOC.
ICC Chairman Greg Barclay said: “We are delighted that LA28 have recommended cricket for inclusion in the Olympics. Whilst this is not the final decision, it is a very significant landmark towards seeing cricket at the Olympics for the first time in more than a century.
“I’d like to thank LA28 for their support during the new sport evaluation process over last two years and we look forward to the final decision being taken at the IOC Session, in India, during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup next week.”
Cricket in Olympics back?
The International Olympic Committee congress will meet in Mumbai on Oct 16. In that session, members will vote for inclusion on the 5 sports. If cricket passes the vote, it will be LA28. It is anticipated that Cricket along with the 5 other sports will be added to the roster.

Flag football, an appealing option for the U.S.-based Games given the overwhelming popularity of the National Football League (NFL), squash and lacrosse would make their Olympic debut, if approved. Cricket, which enjoys enormous global appeal, would return after appearing once before at the 1900 Games, after the tremendous success for women’s cricket at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
