How Mirabai Chanu fared at the Asian Games?

After winning medals at the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships, an Asian Games medal was the only silverware missing from the 29-year-old’s illustrious trophy cabinet. She even missed the World Championships in September to prepare for the Asian Games.

Competing in the 49kg final, she began with a 83kg lift in the Snatch. However she faltered in her next two lifts, she failed to lift 86kgs. It was a big disappointment as she was aiming to lift 90kg in snatch at the Asian Games.

Mirabai Chanu was feeling some pain in her thigh well before her lifts in the final. After her failure in the snatch, it is said that coach Vijay Sharma had asked her to pull out. “After snatch I asked her to pull out but she insisted on going through. She is mentally very tough and insisted that she’ll mange the lift and stand on the podium,” Sharma said.

In the clean and jerk, she managed to lift 108kgs. She stuggled to lift 117kgs in the second attempt. In the third, she had managed to lift the 117kg bar which rested on her collarbone. But the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist’s hip gave up and she crumbled on the floor.

Her campaign came to an end as she registered a total lift of 191 kgs. The 2017 World champion finished behind Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukchaoren, who won the bronze medal with a 191 kg lift. Meanwhile, North Korea’s Ri Songgum won the gold medal with a world record lift of 216kgs. Reigning World champion Jiang Huihua of China settled for silver by lifting 213 kgs.
