Indian cricket team’s World Cup win at home soil is confirmed if the trends of last 2 ODI World Cup are taken into account. Team India, who de-throned arch-rivals Pakistan from top spot in ICC ODI rankings after winning IND vs AUS series 2-1, have a unique trend backing them.
According to the trend, the team securing the top spot in ODI rankings, goes on to win the WC. Notably, this trend started in 2015 when then number 1 side Australia went all the way to lift the World Cup. The next turn was for England, who secured their maiden WC in 2019 being the number 1 ODI side.
Another World Cup trend that has given both India and Pakistan fans hopes is that team that have occupied the top two places on the ODI rankings at the start of the event goes on to win the tournament.
Australia were ranked second when winning the title in 1999 and then occupied top spot on the rankings when clinching the trophy in South Africa in 2003 and in the West Indies in 2007.
Similarly, India were No.2 when they won the 2011 World Cup. Australia (2015) and England (2019) were the No.1 ranked sides when they claimed the coverted title.
Team India in red-hot form
Notably, with securing the number 1 ODI ranking, India also became the number 1 ranked team in all three formats i.e. Tests, ODIs and T20Is.
The Men in Blue have become only the second team after South Africa to occupy the number one spot in men’s team rankings across all three formats.
Team India are going into the WC in impressive form. Rohit Sharma and Co. won their 8th Asia Cup title followed by a 2-1 series against a strong Australian side. With conditions and form on their side, the Men in Blue will be hoping to repeat the 2011 heroics.
Will that be the case in this World Cup as well? Whole of India, at least, hopes for it.
