Asian Games: Neha Thakur wins silver, Eabad Ali bags Bronze medal in Sailing

Neha Thakur and Eabad Ali raised India's tally to 13 medals at the Asian Games 2023.

Indian sailors added to India’s Medals tally on Tuesday, 26th September. Neha Thakur won India’s first medal in Sailing at the Asian Games. Representing the country in the Girl’s Dinghy – ILCA 4 category, she secured the silver after 11 races. In the Men’s RS:X, Eabad Ali bagged the bronze medal. With this, India have 13 medals overall at the 19th Asian Games.

The 17-year-old sailor Thakur’s consistent performance throughout the competition helped her earn a well-deserved place on the podium. With a net total of 27 points after 11 races, 17-year-old sailor Thakur took home a silver in the Girl’s Dinghy ILCA4 competition. Noppassorn Khunboonjan of Thailand won the gold medal with 16, and Keira Marie Carlyle of Singapore claimed third place with 28.

Thakur on Monday finished third in girls’ dinghy ILCA4 race nine, improved one spot to reach second after race 10 with an overall timing of 24:48.

Teenager Neha Thakur hails from Amlataj Village in Dewas District of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. She qualified for the Asian Games after winning the bronze medal earlier this year in March at the Asian Sailing Championship.

Eabad Ali meanwhile finished third in Men’s Windsurfer RS:X with a net score of 52. Thailand’s Natthaphong Phonopparat wins silver and Cho Wonwoo of South Korea took the gold medal. Only six sailors competed in the men’s windsurfer RS:X event.

Meanwhile, KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar, narrowly missed out on a podium spot in the men’s skiff 49er. The duo won the bronze medallists in the last edition of the Asiad. However they managed only a fourt-place finish after 14 races. India’s Siddeshwar Indar Doiphode and Ramya Saravanan also ended up in the fourth place in the five-team mixed multihull Nacra 17 event.
