During Argentina’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, Messi picked up an injury while on international duty. Since then, he has played just 37 minutes before being forced off during an MLS game against Toronto FC. He missed subsequent games against Atlanta United and Orlando City.
With the US Open Cup final against Houston Dynamo in the balance, Martino is in a quandary as he tries to decide whether Messi will be available for the decisive clash.

Tata Martino cautious
Speaking to reporters about Messi’s status, Martino said, “It’s very difficult to give him a percentage because we have to take it day by day. We’ll continue to evaluate him, and, as I always say, I will listen to him first and see how he’s feeling. Then we’ll also need to evaluate future risks. It’s not an easy decision, but we’re going to take the right amount of time to try to not make a mistake.”
What does the future hold?
Inter Miami has a busy schedule ahead of them. They play a crucial match against New York City FC following the US Open Cup final. New York City currently holds the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Martino, Messi and the rest of the team will be looking to close the five-point margin separating them from a playoff spot.
While the presence of Lionel Messi would certainly be a huge advantage for Inter Miami, the most important thing is his health and preventing any further setbacks. The decision on whether or not he will play in the US Open final will be determined after a thorough assessment and weighing of all factors.
